3 2022 Fall Design Trends for People Not Into Design Trends

That's right folks, finally some design trends I can get behind! I poured over all of the top designer's predictions for fall and they all came back to three main principles:

  1. Lasting Style

Well, how does one get their style to "last" you say? Easy! Source pieces you absolutely love, and stop buying throw away decor that you know you'll get tired of by next season. The big box stores want you to do this; they want you to buy garbage that breaks so you're on the hook for new stuff every couple of years. Trends trickle down from the top and by the time they are mass produced and affordable for we, the public, celebrity designers are telling you they are "out." That sucks and it's really hard to achieve a space you love when you're always chasing trends. Designing a home with lasting style is all about picking quality, tasteful pieces that you're going to adore for the long haul. This "trend" that's not really a trend is also fitting considering how many supply chain issues the pandemic has caused. Beautiful vintage pieces are usually of high quality, affordable, and readily available locally. This is also a more sustainable way to furnish your home! That particle board crap that cost you an arm and a leg is eventually going to end up in the dump when it breaks. With that said -- if you fall in love with a big box store particle board piece of crap (we've all been there), buy it! Home design is suppose to make you happy.

2. Bold Patterns and Hues:

Michelle Nussbaumer has been doing this SO WELL for years. Click Here for an article in House Beautiful about an award winning kitchen she created in 2019. While the whole organic modern aesthetic isn't going anywhere, colorful, bold palettes with fun patterns will be making a comeback. Maximalism is the name of the game, so don't be afraid to place your ornately carved antiques, with your fringe velvet lamp, in front of your wild wallpaper. Huzzah. What I love about this trend is that anyone who loves bold colors and patterns can be a part of it without having to overhaul their space.

3. Mindful Spaces:

This trend (that's not really trend) is another that's all about loving the space you're in. Selecting key pieces that bring you joy and leaving the rest of your space simple and functional lends to a clutter free, and calming space. This is especially important with so many people working from home now. The current housing market has forced a lot of people, who otherwise might have moved, into staying put and reimagining their spaces. I run into this all the time as a decorator. I get hired to turn a spare bedroom into a functional multi-purpose room, or help create a homework nook in a family room, etc. With so many people working from home and staying in smaller spaces, there has been a shift to bring the outdoors in, focusing on natural light, organic materials, and plants galore. Check out Andy Villasana for some minimalist inspiration!

There's something out there for everyone, whether you like to do "the most" and take a bold approach, or you want to keep your home a more tranquil space. Don't ever think you need to fall into a category when decorating your space. Invent one, and wait until everyone else gets on board! As long as you are thoughtful in your approach, and are selecting pieces that you love, you won't grow tired of your space.

If you're having trouble figuring out where to start, and can't afford a designer/decorator, pick something that inspires you and work around it! Whether it's a piece of art, furniture, or something even smaller... if you love, I bet you'll fall in love with the room you design around it.
